Mixing a batch of Daddy's stink bait, the way he showed me.

A note from Leland

"My daddy made me promise I'd never write these down. Well, Daddy, I'm sorry."

I've fished the Tennessee River for sixty years. Most of what I catch, I catch on bait I mix myself in an old coffee can: chicken livers, cheese, a little garlic, and one ingredient you'd never guess.

Store-bought bait is made to catch fishermen, not fish. Everything in this book is made from things in your kitchen, your fridge, or your bait shop's cheapest shelf. And every recipe has caught fish for me, not just once but for years.

Keep your line wet, friend.

Chapter 3

The Banned Seven

Seven baits that work so well, folks at the boat ramp swear they ought to be outlawed. They're not. They're just that good.

Inside the book

Real recipe cards, straight off the workbench

Every bait gets its own card: what goes in, how to mix it, how to keep it on the hook, and when the fish want it. Here are a few, with the good parts blacked out until release.

A recipe card from the book on a tablet and a phone

Read it at the river

On your phone: one recipe to a screen, big clear type. No squinting in the sun.

On a tablet or computer: full pages with photos, ready to print and take to the bank.

I keep mine in a zip bag in the tackle box. Works fine wet.

CatfishNo. 01

Coffee-Can Stink Bait

Makes: 1 coffee can · Keeps: 3 weeks · Smell: awful

What goes in

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup fish meal
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup canned sardines
  • 1 egg, beaten, and a little water
  • the one thing that makes it stink right

Leland's way

Mash it all in the can, lid on loose, and leave it in the sun for three hot days. Then roll it into balls that hold on a treble hook through a hard cast.

Don't do this in your wife's kitchen. Ask me how I know.

CarpNo. 14

Sweet Corn Sour Mash

Makes: 1 bucket · Keeps: 1 week · Best: June to September

What goes in

  • 2 lb cracked feed corn
  • 1 can sweet corn, juice and all
  • 1 cup sugar
  • the packet that makes it work

Leland's way

Cover with water, lid on, and let it sour for five days in the shade. Chum a handful an hour before you cast, and the carp will be waiting.

Big carp follow their nose. This gives them something to follow.

TroutNo. 22

The Garlic Cheese Ball

Makes: 40 balls · Keeps: 2 weeks cold · Best: stocked trout

What goes in

  • 1 cup processed cheese
  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • a drop of something sweet

Leland's way

Warm the cheese just soft, work in the flour, roll pea-sized balls. Fish them a foot off the bottom on a small hook.

Out-fishes the jar stuff three to one on stocked trout.

BluegillNo. 31

Bread & Anise Dough

Makes: a fistful · Keeps: 1 day · Cost: about 20 cents

What goes in

  • 2 slices white bread, crusts off
  • 3 drops anise oil
  • A splash of water
  • the pinch that keeps it on

Leland's way

Knead until it's like putty, then pinch a piece the size of your little fingernail over a number 10 hook. Fish it under a tiny bobber in the shade.

Teach a grandkid this one. They'll never forget it.

Questions

30-day money-back guarantee. Read it, mix a batch, go fishing. If it doesn't put more fish on your stringer, reply to your Gumroad receipt within 30 days of release and you get every cent back. No forms, no hard feelings.
What does pre-order mean?

You pay $19.99 today, and on release day (December 15, 2026) the full PDF and all three bonuses arrive by email. You keep the pre-order price; after release the book is $29.99.

Is this a printed book?

No, it's a PDF e-book. It reads on any phone, tablet or computer, and every recipe card prints clean on a home printer so you can take it to the bank or the boat.

Is it hard to read on a phone?

No. It's set in large, clear type with one recipe to a page, so you can read it on your phone without squinting.

How will I get it?

Gumroad emails you a receipt right after you order. On release day the book appears behind the "Open my book" button in that same email, and in your Gumroad library. Nothing to install.

Are these baits actually illegal?

No. Every recipe is legal to use. They're "banned" the way folks at the boat ramp say it: they work so well it hardly seems fair. Always check your state's rules on live bait and chum before you fish.

I'm a beginner. Is this for me?

Yes. Every recipe uses kitchen ingredients and plain steps. If you can stir a pot, you can make these.

Is paying safe?

Checkout runs through Gumroad, which handles thousands of creators' payments. We never see your card number. You can pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal.

How do I get a refund?

Reply to your Gumroad receipt within 30 days of release and say you'd like a refund. That's it.
